1950s Gulf Gas Pump
The business that became Gulf Oil started in 1901 with the discovery of oil near Beaumont in Texas, and with the support of investors including the well known Mellon banking family, became the Gulf Oil Corporation in 1907.
The company promoted the concept of branded products by selling gasoline from pumps bearing their distinctive orange logo and this was a philosophy that carried through to the later years, notably with their sponsorship of the iconic Porsche 917 and Ford GT40 Le Mans cars.Â
Despite many excellent products and a high degree of diversification Gulf Oil lost its way, and by the 1980âs a break up of the company became inevitable. BP and Chevron were amongst those who picked up various divisions but a pared down version of Gulf Oil is still going, and as recently as 2013 they licensed the âGulfâ name for racing fuels in a return to the American motor sports scene, thereby cementing their long held connection with the track.
Our fabulous Gulf gas pump dates from the 1950âs and has been beautifully restored, right down to the chroming on the nozzle. She stands 92â tall including the glorious illuminated bulb on the top and although she canât pump fuel any more she can certainly set the pulse racing, especially if youâre the kind of petrolhead that recognises Gulfâs legendary trackside associations.
The classic orange and blue colour scheme has been expertly matched by our restorers and the paint finish theyâve achieved is second to none. Itâs probably no exaggeration to say that she looks better today than we she first saw service on a gas station forecourt in Main Street USA but sheâs the only one weâve got and she wonât be around for long.
