Marilyn Waterjet Cut 3D Metal Artwork
This remarkable work has been created in a Limited Edition of just 15 pieces and all are signed and numbered by the artist, Mal Sanders, who calls this art form a ’Ferregraph’
Inspired by his frequent travels throughout the USA, he has sought to reinvent popular American cultural icons in this new form, which involves paring down the imagery to its barest essentials and then cutting out the image from 5mm aluminium or steel using an extremely high pressure water jet no thicker than a needle.
The process is similar to laser cutting but by using water, which takes somewhat longer, he is able to achieve an accuracy that wouldn’t be possible otherwise, as a laser creates intense heat which discolours and distorts the metal, especially in areas of fine detail.
The next stage involves fine polishing and spraying, before the programmable LED lights are added to back.
The artwork has special mountings which separate it from the wall by a few centimetres, thereby creating the full 3D effect and allowing the subtly shifting colours to glow as if from within. The desired lighting effect can be achieved using a hand held remote control and the whole system can be mains or battery powered.
Deceptively simple and yet making a powerful graphic statement, these striking pieces are ideally suited to games room walls, where their other-worldly aura will perfectly complement your favourite toys.
